PRINCIPLES IN WRITING EFFECTIVE JOB DESCRIPTIONS

b. State separate duties clearly and concisely

c. Begin each sentence within the "Duties Performed"

section with an active functional verb in the present

    tense (i.e. writes..., etc)

d. Use quantitative words when possible

e. Use specific words, avoiding vague generalizations

f. State duties as duties: postpone statements of

qualifications until the job requirements or specifications

   section

g. Avoid proprietary names (i.e.WordPerfect 6.0, etc) that

make the description obsolete when equipment

    changes occur

spent on each activity and indicate whether duties are

     occasional

i. Limit the use of the word "may" with regard to the

   performance of certain duties
