PRINCIPLES IN WRITING EFFECTIVE JOB DESCRIPTIONS
a. Arrange duties in logical order
b. State separate duties clearly and concisely
c. Begin each sentence within the "Duties Performed"
section with an active functional verb in the present
d. Use quantitative words when possible
e. Use specific words, avoiding vague generalizations
f. State duties as duties: postpone statements of
qualifications until the job requirements or specifications
section
g. Avoid proprietary names (i.e.WordPerfect 6.0, etc) that
make the description obsolete when equipment
changes occur
h. Determine or estimate the percentage of total time
spent on each activity and indicate whether duties are
occasional
i. Limit the use of the word "may" with regard to the
performance of certain duties
j. Never include statement "Other duties as assigned"
